Description
The well-organized system of the city markets gives the inhabitants of French metropolis access to fresh food produce everyday. I always find great pleasure in strolling along the market stalls that bring back childhood memories of my countryside summers, when granny would take me on sense-tickling journies into the enchanted world of the Saturday market square.
Regular markets operate in all the 20 arrondissements (districts) of Paris with their opening hours alternating each day of the week. The smaller central districts usually have one to three markets on open but as we follow the outward spiral of the ascending district numbers, we can even find as many as 8 (!) markets in the larger outer districts. Meandering in Parisian markets is an unmissable experience, not only because of the merry hustle and bustle of colours, scents and sounds or for the sake of the culinary delights on display, but also for the excellent people-watching opportunities it offers of Parisiens going about their everyday business.
